We were responsible for the technical production of the Tokyo Vision Games, a competitive sports gaming event that took place during the Tokyo 2020 Flag Tour Festival / 3 Years to Go to the Tokyo 2020 Games celebration held to commemorate the three years left until the opening of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. The Tokyo Vision Games involved the use of projection mapping technology, with the entire visible wall surface of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building acting as a background.
On 24th July 2017, exactly three years before the opening of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the Tokyo 2020 Flag Tour Festival / 3 Years to Go to the Tokyo 2020 Games celebration was held at the Citizen’s Plaza in front of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. At the plaza, a video produced with the aim of presenting the best aspects of the host city Tokyo, as well as building momentum ahead of the Olympic Games, was displayed against the entire surface of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building using projection mapping technology. This video was followed by the Tokyo Vision Games. The Tokyo Vision Games consisted of a retro-classic tennis game projected against the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, which could be played by using large controllers at the site. We were responsible for the technical production of this game. During the game’s debut exhibition, Olympic and Paralympic athletes took up the challenge and participated in the game as event ambassadors. The bold, dynamic nature of the game and its use of public space made it a hit among the attendees of the exhibition. The game went on to become a huge success after it was opened to the general public, and continued to be a hit throughout its installation.
When the Tokyo Olympic Games are held in 2020, over half a century will have passed since they were last held in 1964. The Tokyo Vision Games functioned as a device linking the past and future of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, a building with high public significance, and brought together the hopes and dreams the public have for the Olympic Games through a combination of sports and electronic gaming.
